Although unconvinced that 'Dog' is dead, the spirituality that lends itself to the appreciation of dogs and their close communion with mankind is swiftly evaporating.
Since as a species we no longer utilize the dog as our ancestors did and as the lands upon we utilized them dwindles into parking lots for strip malls and McMansions our appreciation for their purpose has left us devoid of that 'oneness' we once felt. For the sense of shared community in which we once found ourselves and the closeness to the land, the animals on the whole and nature in general. I see a clear and rapid shift for the use of dogs from livestock guards, drivers and game hunters into more contemporary uses that reflect our changing times from a community of farms and self sustenance to urbanized life and all that comes with it. Dogs are still much a part of our lives and we have found ways in which to use their natural skills as hunters, but for a different type of game. Drugs, contraband, human remains detection, even mold and termite infestations all reflect a different purpose for dogs that still remain closely bound with their original intent. As long as there remains pockets of interest in the value of dogs there will always be 'Dog' and the appreciation of our communion with a species so like ourselves, but so charmingly, radically different. One part of this thread attempts to define training by a set of characteristics which distinguish the trained dog. The second part defines a trained dog by what he does not do. But the first item to be listed in the second part is not an activity that the trained dog does not engage in but seems to reflect a potentiality for harm or state of mind and which reflects other aspects of the dog, as well as training. Is a dog that is willing and capable of protection a menace?
Menace is a loaded word. If a dog is trained for protection work, does that mean the dog is a 'menace' to strangers? Is a willingness to defend synonymous with menacing? That leads down the path of banning certain types of training or in the case of the naturally protective breeds eliminating the characteristics that made them valuable working dogs. Perhaps this is an attempt to define the trained pet?

Does everyone know how to make their own pages? If you don't, please ask for help. The wiki is yours.
I've added a "Calendar" page using this site's Calendar feature, but it's a little klugey. I'll see if we can do better. Get in and mess around some! It's the best way to learn how the wiki works. Catherine

I got a "reminder" email invitation this morning, even though I did sign up when I got the first one. when I use the Konqueror web browser, I'm not able to sign in - I get a "we're sorry, we've encountered a server error" message.
Everything seems to be working when I use Firefox. Did anyone else have trouble? Anyway, glad to be here, thanks for the invite. Cindy

Please, members, go back to your profiles and add your real names. I can't think of any reason why this should be a problem, and I think accountability is a good thing. We should all trust one another at least to this extent. If you put a link to your website (under "Websites"), please provide both your name and location - city and state. Thank you, Catherine Nelson

"Cursed." Exactly. An easier way for me to articulate my thoughts on this is to turn it around and ask "In what way does the dog benefit from learning all those 'fancy tricks'?
First, it stimulates their brains. They learn how to learn. It relieves the boredom of looking out the window or sniffing the same old smells in the same old backyard. Second, it develops a positive attitude towards working with the owner and a spirit of cooperation, making obedience a pleasant and enjoyable means for the dog to obtain positive time and energy from his owner rather than having commands be merely a means of keeping the dog from doing what he wants. Third, it establishes the owner's authority and develops the habit of obedience. It teaches them self control. It teaches them a sense of responsibility. It teaches them that sloppy, "sort of doing what you're told" isn't good enough and improves consistent performance. The most amazing thing I have found resulting from teaching my dogs what many people would consider "fancy tricks" is the sense of pride in themselves the dogs develop. They appear to be truly pleased to be contributing to the work of the household, or what, from their perspective, is their pack. They seem to know the difference between being put through their tricks for enjoyment and and being respected for doing real work. They have a real interest in developing a relationship with me. They become partners rather than attractive nuisances.. Depriving a dog of these benefits, whether through ignorance or laziness. That is absolutely a "curse".

Linda and I pulled this one out of our hats, and I think it's pretty good, but I find myself wishing we'd called it "HE JUST ATTACKED OUT OF NOWHERE." ;-)

So tech challenged, it will take me a while to figure this site out??
Feel like I just joined a secret society. Are we suppose to invite others on or do the list leaders have that function? Jeanne

I'd like to keep rules to a minimum. Once you set something as a rule, then you have to have someone to make sure the rules aren't being violated ... not my idea of a productive time. As one of the creators of this wiki, I'm after moderation. I'd like to see transparency, accountability. Unless there's some principle I'm missing, would you please sign your name to the articles you've written that you post? These are our opinions and approaches; there is, as you know, almost nothing about dog training that is incontestable. Wouldn't it be an interesting exercise to all write an article about our philosophical approach to dog training? We'll have to come up with some structure to organize articles once there are more than a few. But that can wait for now. what do you think?
